Selecting a Filter Bag

Filter bags or cartridges are usually selected so the clean pressure drop does not exceed 2 Psi. Changing out bag filters is recommended at 15 Psid for bags and 30 Psid for cartridges. Higher pressure drops may be tolerated when contaminant loading is low.  Bag Filter with Handle

Typically, our standard and pleated filter bags have between 5 and 25 sq. ft. of surface area and hold from 1 to 11 pounds of contaminants, providing an excellent balance between cost and capacity.

Industrial filtration elements offer several unique designs, including X-Tend filter bags, Graded Density filter bags, and bag-sized pleated cartridges. All filter bags and cartridges fit our standard housings.

If you require ultra high capacity filtration and efficiency, our high flow series of liquid filter elements use between 85 and 100 sq. ft. of surface area to filter out several pounds of contaminants with efficiency as high as 99.98%. Rosedale’s high flow series filters can contain as many as thirty one 60” filter cartridges.

Choosing the right filter bag for your application is essential to performance. Learn more about how to select a filter bag in our blog.

Filter Efficiency of Industrial Filter Bags

Filtration efficiency values specified in our data sheets are an indication of filter performance. Unlike many manufacturers, Rosedale publishes the filtration efficiency and dirt capacity of our media, providing the information needed for accurate filter sizing.

Our media is offered in standard grade and high efficiency. Standard grade refers to nominally rated products, meaning there is no specified efficiency at the micron size, but the product is interchangeable with industry standards. High-efficiency media products from Rosedale are rated 95%, 99%, or 99.98% efficient at the specified micron level.

Filtration Levels for Filter Bags

Rosedale offers many levels of filtration to meet application criteria, including low-cost, standard-efficiency filter bags and high-efficiency, high-capacity  Bag Filter elements.

Standard capacity elements usually have about 4.4 sq. ft. of surface area, allowing them to hold approximately a pound of contaminant, ideal for many applications. Bags providing standard capacity filtration include the standard filter bag, the Beta Bag®, and RPO plastic top, self-sealing bag filters. These offerings fit standard side inlet housings.

Filter Bag Micron Ratings

Micron-rated filter bags utilize micron units of measurement to determine the size of contaminants a filter can remove. A micron is a unit of measurement equaling one-millionth of a meter and is used to measure a single particle of contaminant.
Micron filter bags are rated between 1 and 200 microns, with a smaller micron number satisfying a finer filtration level. However, micron ratings are not the only indicator of filter efficacy; removal efficiency also contributes to filtration system performance.

Micron Bag Filter Material Construction and Rating

Most micron filter bags are assigned a nominal micron rating based on 50% to 80% efficiency. Filters that remove a nominal 50% to 80% of all particles larger than 50 microns in a single pass are rated 50 microns nominal.
Micron-rated filter bags manufactured from monofilament mesh or multilayer microfibers receive an absolute rating. An absolute-rated micron filter bag will capture 98% or more of its rated particles in a single pass. Absolute micron ratings are displayed as the micron size followed by the letter A.

Replacing a Filter Bag

To continue operation as intended, bag filters must be replaced. Throughout use, filter bags become filled with contaminants, making it more difficult for  liquid to pass through. Properly maintaining filter bags can eliminate potential system damage, slow efficiency, and costly clogs.

Filter bags can have different lifespans depending on system requirements, with various factors further impacting lifespan. Evaluating if pressure differentials have increased is an ideal way to determine if your filter bag needs replacing. Additional information on replacing filter bags can be found within our resources.

We also offer a line of Pall/ FSI filter bag equivalents for those transitioning to a new manufacturer.

Bag Filter Installer Cage

Industrial filtration systems use additional accessories to provide high-quality filtering. Filter cages and restrainers, hold-down devices, replacement elements, and bags are essential to the performance and longevity of filtration systems.

Bag filter hold-down assemblies ensure positive bag sealing in critical applications. Offered in stainless steel and steel constructions, hold-down devices can be used with any Rosedale filter housing.

Filter cages and bag filter restrainers provide support to prevent bags from folding during the filtering process. Cages guarantee that a filter bag is seated correctly and fully extended to ensure the complete surface area is utilized. Additionally, cages can be used in conjunction with a liquid displacer to remove metal contamination and are compatible with a variety of single and multi-bag housing applications.
